Auto-Owners Insurance is one of the largest property and casualty insurance companies domiciled in Michigan. Auto-Owners success can be traced back from its present management to the early leadership of Vern V. Moulton who, in 1916, organized Auto-Owners Insurance Company in Mt. Pleasant, MI. The infant Company had no capital and was housed in one room of a bank building.
Auto-Owners operated in Mt. Pleasant for a little less than a year. In 1917, V.V. Moulton literally picked the Company up, placed it under his arm and in his pocket (the Company consisted of one book of policyholders' names and $174.25 in assets), and moved Auto-Owners to Lansing, Michigan.
It wasn't long before the Depression began, and Auto-Owners weathered even the lowest point of that era - the bank holidays of February 1933. The Company demonstrated its corporate toughness and financial stability by paying all claims promptly, daily, and IN CASH! The firm was then writing more than $2.5 million in insurance premiums.
Auto-Owners entered the general casualty insurance field in 1940, having previously written only automobile insurance. During the next five years, the Company found it necessary to acquire three more buildings in the vicinity of its main office to accommodate its continued growth.
Today, Auto-Owners has full-service offices in Lansing, MI; Traverse City, MI; White Bear Lake, MN; Peoria, IL; Montgomery, AL; Marion, IN; Lima, OH; Lakeland, FL; Brentwood, TN; West Des Moines, IA; Charlotte, NC; Mesa, AZ; Appleton, WI; Duluth, GA; and Columbia, SC; with claim offices in 59 cities.
The Company wrote business in Michigan exclusively from 1916 until 1935 when it began writing insurance in Indiana and Ohio. In the forties, Auto-Owners extended operations to include Illinois and Minnesota and, during the fifties, Iowa, North and South Dakota, Florida, Missouri, Alabama, Tennessee, and North and South Carolina. The Company began operations in Wisconsin in 1969, Georgia in 1973, Nebraska in 1978, Arizona in 1982, Virginia in 1989, Kentucky in 1994, Kansas in 1996, Utah in 1997 and Colorado in 1999.
The current Auto-Owners home office is located in a business and residential complex called Verndale, in Delta Township, west of Lansing. This building was constructed in 1975 and has been expanded twice, increasing its size to 284,000 square feet.
The Lansing corporate office services not only Auto-Owners Insurance Company, but its subsidiary companies: Auto-Owners Life Insurance Company, Home-Owners Insurance Company, Owners Insurance Company, Property-Owners Insurance Company, and Southern-Owners Insurance Company. The Lansing Branch Underwriting and Lansing Branch Claims offices are also housed in the same complex.
Auto-Owners growth evolves from its loyal associates, agents and policyholders. The Companies are represented by more than 5,000 independent agencies, selling personal and commercial property/casualty and life, disability and annuity insurance in 23 states. Total associates number more than 2,900.
The Auto-Owners Insurance Group ranks among the largest in the nation, with over three million policies in force. The Companies also enjoy the highest possible ratings assigned by nationally recognized independent rating authorities.
Auto-Owners has been recognized by Ward Financial Group as one of the 50 “Top Performers”-- companies that have done the best job of balancing financial safety, consistency and performance over the past 5 years, according to Business Insurance (August 26, 2002). Auto-Owners is one of only eight companies on this list for twelve consecutive years.
Drive Insurance is the fourth-largest auto insurance company in the country, with more than 8 million customers. We're committed to using the latest technology and innovation to improve the experience of our customers. At Drive Insurance , we care about how we do business.
Drive Insurance has been recognized by Ward Financial Group as one of the 50 “Top Performers”-- companies that have done the best job of balancing financial safety, consistency and performance over the past 5 years, according to Business Insurance (August 26, 2002).
On March 10, 1937, Joseph Lewis and Jack Green started Progressive Mutual Insurance Company because they wanted to provide vehicle owners with security and protection. They also thought it was a good investment for a couple of lawyers who were just getting started.
Drive Insurance was innovative from the start. For the first time, customers could pay their premiums in installments, an option that appealed to workers who could not afford annual premiums. They could even get drive-in claims service. Drive Insurance wanted to make it easy for average people to protect one of their most important investments -- their vehicles.
The company grew steadily throughout the next decade, moving to new offices in downtown Cleveland, Ohio in 1951. In 1955, after the death of Joe Lewis, Jack Green became CEO and Peter Lewis, Joe's son, began his career with Drive Insurance . Peter brought fresh ideas and began looking for ways to distinguish the company from its competitors. In 1956, the company formed Progressive Casualty Company to write auto insurance for high risk drivers (today the company serves all types of drivers).
The growing company expanded in the 1960s and formed the Progressive Corporation. In 1965, Peter Lewis took over the reins of the company when he assumed the title of CEO, a title he still held when he celebrated his 45th anniversary with the company in 2000.
After becoming a public company in 1971 and moving its headquarters to Mayfield Village, Ohio, the company experienced steady growth throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1987, Drive Insurance surpassed $1 billion in premiums and the company’s stock was listed on the New York Stock Exchange Progressive (NYSE:PGR). The stage was set for a period of innovation in the 1990’s that truly set it apart from the competition.
Drive Insurance didn’t become the country’s fourth largest insurance company by doing business the way other companies did. The company set a new standard for customer service in 1990 with the introduction of a full range of personal auto insurance products and Immediate Response® claims service that was available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Help now was just a phone call away, any time of the day or night. Progressive’s claims representatives traveling in Immediate Response Vehicles (introduced in 1994) could even come right to the scene of an accident.
1992 brought 1-800-AUTOPRO (1-800-288-6776), a cutting-edge auto insurance rate comparison shopping service. No longer would customers have to spend endless amounts of time calling around to compare auto insurance rates. One phone call to AUTO PRO would give customers a Progressive quote and comparison rates for up to three competitors. If the customer was satisfied with the Progressive quote, they could buy the policy directly on the phone or locally through an independent agent. 1992 was also the year Progressive was recognized as being the largest seller of auto insurance through independent insurance agents.
Drive Insurance changed its focus from nonstandard insurance in 1993, offering its products to all drivers, and in 1994, the company surpassed $2 billion in premiums.

Foremost offers insurance coverage for Mobile Homes, Specialty Homeowners, Specialty Landlord, Motor Homes, Travel Trailers, Fifth-Wheels, Luxury Motor Coaches, Motorcycles, Off-Road Vehicles Snowmobiles, and Personal Watercraft.
Foremost is part of Farmers Insurance Group and does business in the United States. The Foremost Companies are Foremost Insurance Company Grand Rapids Michigan, Foremost Signature Insurance Company, Foremost Property and Casualty Insurance Company, American Federation Insurance Company, Foremost County Mutual Insurance Company (Texas) and Foremost Lloyds of Texas.
Foremost Insurance Company began insuring mobile homes on June 12, 1952. In those days, the mobile home industry was in its infancy. Housing was in short supply after World War II and families were growing at a record pace thanks to the “Baby Boom.” While mobile homes were an inexpensive solution to the housing problem, no companies insured these “homes on wheels.”
After beginning with three people in a one-room office in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, less than a year later the staff numbered 11. In five years we were doing business in 35 states.
That was just the start, though. Foremost grew at a record pace. We developed new ways of insuring recreational vehicles, and in 1961 introduced the first policy designed specifically for travel trailers.
While the United States moved ahead with giant scientific leaps; like the space program, Foremost moved forward with a full-scale entry into the RV insurance market. We expanded our insurance programs for RVs in 1969 and continued adding more types of insurance to our product lines.
In 1978 we sold our first automobile policy and started insuring site-built homes in 1982.
In 1993 we developed a special dwelling fire insurance program for landlords and owners of older homes.
In 1996 we began direct marketing auto and home insurance, which included offering auto and home programs to employees of select companies.
In 1999, we developed a unique service program for owners of Luxury Motor Coaches who insure with us.
During 2000, Foremost began offering motorcycle and off-road vehicle insurance programs, including a program for snowmobiles, and in 2002 Foremost began offering an insurance program for personal watercraft.
“Innovation leads to growth” has been Foremost’s guiding philosophy since the company’s founding. Today, and into the future, we continue to be committed to creative ideas that will improve our service.
